How to apply for your provisional licence and the costs

In order to be issued a provisional license, you must meet the following criteria.

  • Be at least 15 years and 9 months of age
  • Be able to read a number plate from at least 20 meters away
  • Have legally lived in the UK for at least 185 days in total in the past 12 months

Once you have met the criteria above you can move onto the next stage.

Getting Started

Prices are subject to change by the DVLA but at present the cost to apply for your provisional license is £34 online and £43 if you apply via post. You can pay online by Mastercard, Via, Electron or Delta debit or credit card.

You will also need an identity document such as your passport, addresses where you have lived up to the last 3 years. You may also be asked to provide your national insurance number so always have it to hand when you are applying for your license

Your license should arrive within one week if you apply online according to Gov.co.uk. It may take longer if any additional checks need to be made.
