New updates have been added to the Highway Code preparing us for the new technology wave that is predicted to be introduced next year.
These changes have been introduced so that autonomous vehicle technology will be used appropriately once introduced fully around the UK.
Self-driving vehicles are different to those that are only fitted with assisted driving features, like cruise control and lane-keeping assistance. The driver still needs to be responsible for driving when driving with ‘assisted driving.’
Whereas with self-driving cars, you are not responsible for how it drives. You can turn your attention away from the road, even with permission to view content through the car’s built-in infotainment system.
A self-driving car can’t be used all the time. It may be limited depending on your situation. For example, the type of road, when you are driving, the weather, and sometimes the location. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions on when and how to use the feature safely.
These laws are still required when using self-driving mode:
- You must be fit to drive. You cannot be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, driving within the drink-drive legal limit.
- The vehicle must be road legal. It must have a valid MOT certificate and if applicable, must be taxed and insured.
- You must not do anything illegal. No handheld devices can be used unless outlined in rule 149.
When driving in self-driving mode, you must always be able and ready to take back control when the car prompts you to do so. Once you have resumed control, you will be fully responsible for all aspects of driving.
These updates won’t impact your driving yet but it is still important to understand your responsibility towards your own and other road users’ safety.
