Do you know about the driving probation period?

This 24-month span is called the probation period and it applies to everyone who passes their test.

If you manage to accumulate six points on your license during this period, expect to lose your license and the freedom that comes with it.

Here are the penalties that you need to look out for:

  • Running a red light. This will result in three points and a £100 fine.
  • Driving over the speed limit. Three points and a £100 fine will be issued. Serious offences can face a fine of anything between £1,000 to £2,500 for speeding on the motorway.
  • Drink or drug driving. This leads to an automatic ban, jail for up to six months and an unlimited fine. Offend again within ten years and you will be banned from driving for at least three years.
  • Not stopping at a zebra crossing. Most pedestrian crossing offences are dealt with by a Fixed Penalty Notice, along with three points. It doesn’t stop there, you will also be fined £100, but the penalty could be anything up to £1,000.
  • Tyre issues. If your tyres are bald or damaged then you can get a £2500 fine and three points on your license, per faulty tyre!!
  • Not in control. If you are eating, drinking, smoking or otherwise being distracted whilst you are behind the wheel you will receive three points and a fine of at least £100. You may even possibly get a ban.
  • Using a mobile phone. If you are caught using a handheld device you will get six points and a £200 fine. If you try and fight it in court you could receive a £1,000 fine and potentially even be banned.
  • Failing to stop. If you cause personal injury you MUST stop to give your details and then report the incident to the police. Otherwise, you could face 5-10 points and a stinker of a fine. As well as potentially being banned too, you could face up to six months in prison.
  • Dangerous driving. If convicted of dangerous driving by the Crown Court, you could face an unlimited fine and/or two years in jail.
  • Not insured on your vehicle. At the minimum, £300 fine and six points on your license.
  • Driving whilst being banned. If you have been disqualified from driving but have been caught behind the wheel, you could be jailed for six months, fined an unlimited fine and you will almost certainly have the ban extended.

Four out of the 12 above are immediate six points on your record, meaning if you have passed your test within two years you will be automatically disqualified.

Drive well and remember what you learned in your lessons. If you drive safely you will get to the two-year mark with zero points and two years’ worth of valued driving experience.
