What do I need for the Theory Test?

What do I need for the Theory Test is a question most learner drivers ask. The Theory Test day can be nerve-wracking, so to make it go as smoothly as possible it’s important that you are fully prepared and know what to expect.

  1. Preparation is key and starts the night before with a good night’s sleep. Nursing a hangover on test day is not going to give you the best start so instead; spend some time revising, make sure you know the address of the test centre and how to get there and then get an early night in so you can wake up refreshed and 100% focused.
  2. On the day of the test make sure you’re up in plenty of time to have breakfast (bananas are great for calming nerves), get ready and get to the test centre in time.
  3. You MUST take your UK photocard driving licence to the test with you. Without this, your test will be cancelled and you will not get your money back, so make sure you have it on you before making your way there.
  4. If you’ve prepared the night before you’ll know exactly where the test centre is located so on the day of your test you can make sure you allow extra time for your journey. You must plan to arrive at least 10 minutes early and if you arrive late, the test centre may cancel your test and you may lose your test fee.
  5. Once you arrive at the test centre, the administrator will check your details and confirm that you are booked in to have a Theory Test. You will be asked to sign a digital display, and then handed a locker key to store your belongings. Before you put your mobile phone in the locker you must have it switched off and confirmed that it is switched off by the administrator.
  6. Before your test, you will be handed a rules document, which needs to be read and handed back to the examiner.  Depending on how busy the Theory Test centre is, you will be asked to go through to the examination room with the administrator.
  7. This person will check your photocard provisional licence, assign you a computer on the system and point to where you need to sit in the room for your computer. They will usually have screens in front of them showing different angles of the test room to make sure nobody is breaking the rules.
  8. Once the test begins, you will answer the multiple choice Theory Test questions by pressing the touch sensitive screen. In the Hazard Perception Test, you will respond by using either a left or right mouse button.
  9. The tests each have their one introduction videos and headphones are provided so that you can listen to the voice instructions. For both parts of the test, you will be given a test question to practise with before starting the assessed part of the test. After the multiple choice part, you can choose to have a break of up to three minutes before moving on to the Hazard Perception part of the test.
  10. Once you have completed the test, you will be asked to wait around 10 minutes before being given your results and hopefully your pass certificate!

If you do forget your driving licence you will have to wait one day before you can rebook your Theory Test.
